Enjoy Your Neighborhood Walk

neighborhood walk

Take time out from your radio and computer activities and enjoy a neighborhood walk, several times a day. Listen to a book, if you want.

I spend a lot of time each day listening to my radios, working on my computers or playing in the lab. If you are retired guy, that’s probably you, as well. These are very sedentary activities.

Add in watching television, and you might actually find that you spend a third of your day sitting on your ass. This is true for lots of folks still working, as well. We all know that exercise is good for health and controlling weight. But it is also good for better posture and self image.

So, I always make a point to go for a neighborhood walk at least twice a day, sometimes three. Basically, if I have been sitting in my radio room or at the computer for three hours, it’s time for a break. I make sure my walks include hills, and typically last 45 minutes.

I enjoy walking, especially in the warmer weather when I wear shorts and sandals. Not so much fun in the winter when temperatures dip below -20C. Ice can be a challenge as well. But, I would say for 95% of the time, walking works with the weather.

Walking is a great way to meet your neighbors and make some new friends, particularly dogs! Sometimes you can get immersed in a conversation (with people, not dogs) and lose complete track of time.

Neighborhood Walk and Listening to a Book

But mostly, I spend my walking time listening to an audiobook on my iPod. Recently, I have also tried playing books on my phone with Bluetooth earbuds. Earbuds are great, but mine fit so tight that background noises disappear – so look where you are going!

We are lucky to have lots of great walking paths in our neighborhood. You probably do as well, so take a break and go for a walk often.
